Elizabeth Gaskell
186 Installments

As brilliant for its compassion as its art, Gaskell’s socially conscious masterpiece shows the early effects of the Industrial Revolution on both workers and employers through the intelligent eyes of Margaret Hale, whose advocacy for the local mill workers both creates and threatens her passionate entanglement with the mill’s owner.

The eloquence of the writing is both tantalizing and satisfying, whether she be describing a rose bush in a picturesque village, the filth of the industrial slums, or the deep, inner workings of the human heart. Certainly worth reading again and again!

I LOVED this book! In fact, I was so impatient to finish this, that I received 40 installments in 1 day! The writing is Extraordinary, and so thoughtful. You care for the characters. The descriptions are so vivid, you can see the smoke over Milton, or the leaves on the roses! I would recommend this book to everyone!

A darling little book that brings up some of the socio-economic problems in Northern & Southern England while giving us a quiet love story. Though I must say the movie (well, BBC miniseries) is better.

I really enjoyed North and South even though the character of Margaret was a little irritating at times. I only wish it hadn't ended so abruptly.

Elizabeth Gaskell has impressed me. I do so love the classics. I first heard of her through PBS - Cranford. I was not disappointed by her novels. Although a little wordy at times - a trait like her contemporaries - but that was easily overlooked due to my attachment that developed for her characters.

i enjoyed the story even though at times it reminds you of 'Pride and prejudice'. I wish the endings were a bit dramatic like the Jane Austen's masterpiece but nevertheless, it was a good read.
