Maggie: A Girl of the Streets
Stephen Crane
24 Installments

In New York’s Bowery, Maggie's home is marked by despair, but she dreams of a better life amidst the chaos. When a childhood friend returns to her years later, she grasps for love and is left dangling above ruin. Considered too risky by publishers because of its realist treatment of unsavory themes, Crane published the book himself.

Sad and simple, but sounds authentic. Raw and graphic but in a very decent and eloquent way. Well worth reading.

I admire the tackling of the theme but I have to admit I had trouble reading the street vernacular.
