Moby Dick
Herman Melville
214 Installments

One of the funniest and strangest narrators in literature goes to sea with a maniacal captain on a doomed whaling voyage. Ishmael’s rollicking digressions on everything from whaling to philosophy may have put you off in high school, but they also happen to be some of the liveliest and most bizarre passages you’ll ever read.

This is a fantastic book, but a lot of the words and references are obscure. If you need a boost while you're reading, there's a free annotation online at powermobydick.com.

It's a good thing that this book hasn't been tainted by pop culture movies of shows unlike most books these days.

This is one truly awsome classic. It's like your right there on the boat. Nothing bad to say about this book.

I would never have gotten through all of Moby Dick if not for Dailylit. There are many long dull parts that would have had me put the book down and probably never pick it back up. As one friend said, "it takes them a very long time to find that whale." And yet, I cannot say that I didn't like these parts of the book, they make it what it is. And so Dailylit really came to the rescue because it allowed me to digest all the philosophical discussions in manageable pieces. In fact, I probably got more out of the book for having the time to ponder a section rather than plowing ahead. If you've ever wanted to read Moby Dick, this is the way to do it.

The famous captain Ahab and his chase after the whale who cost him his leg comprises mainly the last part of the book. For the rest it is a treatise on whaling, on whales, on religion a very entertaining tale about life upon a whaleboat. The Book of Jonah as told by the chaplain who was a captain of a whaling ship is very funny, but never disrespectful of the Bible.

Moby Dick gives an insight in what life on sea must have been before ships had radios and other communication devices and before helicopters could pick up people off a ship in need.
I liked it so much, that I bought the book.
I recommend it to everyone.

For a book of this magnitude, the reader needs to give it some time to really build up. It starts off slow, but once it gets rolling, you'll be hooked.

I'd hoped for more from this, as many people get such great things from it. I found it hard to read and hard to hold together. For something that turns out not to be much of a sequential novel at all, it's quite long. You spend most of the book not knowing what kind of chapter you'll read next, and it's strange in many ways. But, it's also beautiful sometimes. And overall, a satisfying one to conquer. (Reviewed it bigger on Goodreads: http://dft.ba/-12o3)

Not a huge fan of this one, but a worthy read if you are into the classics.

Moby Dick is long, but not too long. Many of the passages are better read out loud than silent, as the character of the speech is sometimes lost without recitation. Overall I found it a bit uneven but still profound in its archetypes and its implications. The technical sections are so numerous and lengthy that it sometimes reads as non-fiction more than fiction. Best to think of it as a sort of dual selection; part fiction and part non-fiction.

Brilliant
Classic tale of the mad revenge hunt for a whale. The ending is a little suprising and well worth the read. Some parts do get a little long and boring (history of whale hunting and some other bits), but overall, the tall of the pequod is fascinating.

Really an incredible book, not just for the story, which, like A Christmas Carol, we've all probably heard or at least vaguely know about its ending, but for it intricate details about whaling, the hardships and the techniques. Melville provides a amateur's POV in the narrator ("Call me Ishmael"). The diversity of characters and their internal conflicts provide a cross-section of the types of men who spent years at sea with the hopes of bringing home whale oil and ambergris. The specter of the white whale, who really only physically shows up at the very end of the book, broods over the entire novel. What surprised me most was the hints by Ishmael that he was not entirely pleased with the whaling trade. I didn't expect that at all. Evidently, Moby Dick is experiencing a resurgence in interest. Who knew?
