The Woman in White - Mostly Great - But Sometimes Not
Great plot twists and connections,but sometimes story was lost in long, wordy ramblings. There was a portion that I was incredibly bored, but I am so glad that I stuck with it.

Why do I keep reading these stories? I was actually feeling hopeful while reading "Uncle" - thinking that it might come to some other conclusion than death, but I was wrong. I wasn't even expecting a happy ending - just maybe that Dan could have walked away knowing that he had avoided a terrible situation. Anyway, I think that David Wellington is a talented writer, but too twisted for me. So I guess that I am saying"uncle" - I am done.

I am not sure here either, but I think that the ending of"Barn" means that the creature in the woods actually summoned the man from the depths of darkness instead of the man calling it. So the creepy man was actually more sinister and to be feared more that the creature itself.

I was thinking that the man was showing the picture of his autistic son as sort of offering to the thing. In the story the man was sort of going over how his son had no quality of life and that he himself had helped others as a lawyer - this helped the man justify sacrificing the son. I think it was the son, but the secretary is a possibility. I'm kind of getting into these stories now ... they seem to be getting better! "Blink" was a great one.

I really liked "18.9". The "science" behind it was intriguing - I wonder if there was any truth to it. The ending was actually one of the more positive ones - nobody get eaten. Maybe Subject D turned on the scientist and choked him to death or something. (I think that these stories may be warping me just a little.) Anyway, if Wellington has more like "18.9" I'll hang in there.

I have decided to read 10 of them, and if, they all end with death or no ending, then I figure that there will be little reason to continue - I'll always know that the characters will just get eaten or eventually killed. I kind of like the nightmare quality - especially around this time of year, but the predictability will get old.

I like intelligent, unusual stories - my favorite tv show is LOST. However, the weirdness needs to lead somewhere - I am not into being weird just for the sake of being weird. After 3 of these stories, I am already predicting their endings of death and weirdness. However, I have to admit that there is an addicting quality to the tales - they are told well. I can't decide if I want to keep reading them or not. They are kind of a mind trip, but if they are all going to conclude in an open ended way, I don't know if I want to read 30 of them. I was wondering what other people thought about theses stories.

I was disappointed in this book. It was just an endless list of steps that Chuck Feeney took to build his fortune. There was very little shared about the human side to the man or his family. It was boring. Save your money.

I get a kick out of Sir Arthur Canon Doyle's style. It's very proper and British.I was surprised at the shortness of the mystery
Question of the Week - Question of the Week #26: Once upon a time...
I teach elementary school and we do a study of fairy tales. We have a list of elements to look for. It is fun to analyze the stories and see that there really is a "formula" that they follow. "Cinderella" is by far the classic fairy tale and has been re-done many times and by many different cultures.

I laughed when I saw your title - thanks for saying what I was thinking. There were some good lines and thoughts in this piece, but basically I didn't get it. I feel better knowing that I am not alone. Also, I would just like to say I like the positive energy with DailyLit. Many sites I read are just negative venting and ranting. Here it seems people are honest, but they offer support and solutions. COOL!

I think that you make a good point - this classic is best in short installments. I signed up for longer installments, but now I am thinking that I need to down-size. My mind wanders when I read it, so if I keep it short, I may be able to finish it. Thanks for the insight.

A Room with a View - Truly Romantic
If you want a little romance in your life - READ this book! There are great characters - George and his father will melt your heart. The observations of life and love throughout the novel will stir your emotions. Yes, you will want to choke the heroine Lucy sometimes, but it is worth it.
The Wind in the Willows - Great fun.
I agree that The Wind in the Willows is a fun read. I mostly appreciated the importance of friendship throughout the tale.

I can not remember how I discovered DailyLit, but I am glad I did. I sometimes did not allow myself to read because I can obsess on a book and not get stuff done - or I just let the book collect dust. With DL I pretty much stick with one or two installments a day - and it's right there in my e-box. It really is genius if you think about it. Thanks, Susan! I tell all my friends about DailyLit.

Hi,smerler. I had different expectations too. I don't know if I am going to see the movie. Hilde and Ben are doomed lovers which I am guessing the movie explores more than the book. That would make it even sadder.

I forgot how much I love F.Scott. He can say so much with so little. This story is strange and touching - unreal but real. I enjoyed it.
