  • Wow - that list is like a "Must Read" list for anyone interested in classic literature. It saddens and angers me so much that small minded people feel that banning a book is an answer to anything.

Perish the thought that people might be able to exercise self censorship and simply decide not to read something because they don't want to rather than trying to tell someone else what they can and cannot read.

I could not even begin to choose a favourite from that list. I have read a lot of them. But I have not read them all so at least I have a new list of books to read in the future.

  • The two I like are: Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (so imaginative and provocative) and Light in August by William Faulkner which is my personal favorite of Faulkner's work.

  • I like Howl by Allen Ginsberg -- it was considered obscene, but its publisher won the 1957 obscenity trial.

I agree with cresswga -- it's horrible and sad and disgusting that people try to ban books! We should all read the ones on the banned lists... :)

  • On that list it's a toss up between Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse Five.

  • Gone Wind the Wind - Margaret Mitchell

It's such an accurate depiction of Southern culture. And Scarlett is so real!

  • For now I would say 1984 but there are so many books in that list that I am planning on reading. If I didn't know any better I would say that list looks more like a "must read" book list than a "banned books" list. :)

  • Gone With the Wind is my favorite from that list, but I am also a huge fan of all Faulkner and Hemingway. As a teacher I cannot overstate the spiritual experience that is teaching Lord of the Flies or A Separate Peace.

  • The biggest surprise on that list to me: that Charlotte's Web and Winnie-the-Pooh are on it. I can not imagine childhood without those 2 books.

  • Most of these I totally get. Bur Charlotte's Web? Seriously? Winie the Pooh? Kids not even old enough for elementary school can read these. Why were these banned?

  • My favorite is Catch-22 because it was the book that gave me access to layers. It helped me notice that all great books have way more than a story going on and made everything I read after so much richer.
