Question of the Week

Question of the Week #42: Whodunnit?

Agatha Christie's birthday is this week (she would have been 119). Celebrate by telling us: What's your favorite mystery--fiction or real-life, book or screen? Do you love Sherlock Holmes? Or would you rather kick back and watch a Law & Order: SVU marathon on TV?

  • I love Sherlock Holmes, but I also love Dashiell Hammett's novels and short stories.

  • For a living writer, try Chris Bohjalian's The Double Bind. It really up-dates this style of writing in surprising and thrilling ways.

  • Sherlock Holmes or any of Raymond Chandler's stories. I always preferred Philip Marlow to Sam Spade.

Kiss Me Deadly is one of my favourite films but I could never get into Mickey Spillane's books.

My sister is a HUGE Christie fan but I always liked the films and TV series more than the books.

  • I read lots of mysteries. I tend to read women mystery writers and my very favorite is Marcia Muller. Have followed her series since the very first book. Oh, and Elizabeth George. I gobble up each book as it is released and then have to wait impatiently for the next one.

  • The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith (but I love all her books) that is just the most well-known, because of the movie.

  • I have a lifelong love of Hercule Poirot and enjoy his wit and intellect both on the printed page and on the screen. David Suchet is by far my favorite. I also like to listen to recorded books while driving and the BBS's versions of Hercule's stories are delightful. However, I may have seen every episode of Law & Order ever made as well.

  • Agatha Christies' Hercule Poirot has always absolutely delighted me. He's so quirky, almost OCD, with a strange way of investigating. He makes me laugh. "Murder on the Orient Express" is my favorite. Also the first I read. I also love Sherlcok Holmes. I love Monk and Psych on TV.

  • I teach 4th grade, and might I suggest Skeleton Creek and The Ghost in the Machine both by Patrick Carman. Innovative books that include print and video.
