  • Garion from The Belgariad and The Malloreon seris by the late David Eddings. He was just a typical teenage boy that got swept into a world of mystery, sometimes chaos, and alot of adventure. The choices he made shows his versatilty and as each new adventure(or as he plot thickens)it showed his maturity. I think that would qualify him to be a best friend...I'd stand by his side as a comrad any day and be a real friend!

As for worst, I I really don't have any at this time!

    Regards,

  • For best friend I would definitely say Elizabeth Bennet, although I could easily make up a great group of girlfriends from Austen's other heroines!

For the worst I would say Catherine Earnshaw from Wuthering Heights, she was a nasty piece of work.

  • Oh, I like the idea of Elizabeth Bennet as a best friend. For the worst friend, I would have to say Mrs. Danvers from REBECCA. Now there's a real piece of work!

  • Gandalf for sure.

  • Roald Dahl's Big Friendly Giant certainly proved himself to be a true friend...but Elinor and Marianne (Sense and Sensibility) would also be rewarding friends, I think.
Worst: the entire Reed Family, from Jane Eyre.

  • Tom Jones by Fielding would be the best party hardy fun friend; Iago from Shakespeare the worst.

  • Arthur Clennam from Little Dorrit would be high on my list. Dirk Gently would be fun, as would Ford Prefect.

  • Best friend would be the main character of Eat, Pray, Love. I would have loved to go on her journey with her and find even more of myself.

Worst friend would have to be Mr. Bumble from Oliver Twist.

  • That's really hard. But for me I think my literary best friend(s) would be Howard Roark, Gail Wynand and Dominique Francon from Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead". Binx Boiling from Walker Percy's "The Moviegoer" and Sal Paradise from Jack Kerouac's "On The Road". . .

The worst I suppose would be the character/narrator from Albert Camus' "The Fall". . .

Can't really explain why these characters would be the best and worst of literary friends, but mostly because they appeal to me and I'd have little to say to them because we think too much alike. Cliche I know, but that's seriously the only way I can explain it!

  • Jamie Fraser from Outlander (Claire too, for that matter). Loyal, funny, strong...couldn't ask for anything better. Same goes for Jane Eyre, Ron and Hermione and Neville, Elizabeth Bennett, and Susan and Lucy Pevensie. Definitely agree on Catherine Earnshaw for worst, would add Millie (the fireman's wife in Farenheit 451...man she's annoying and self-centered)

  • Don Quixote would be a fun friend. Also, Holden Caulfield! They're both interesting and sort of crazy, but very loyal, thoughtful, etc.

Ignatius Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces would be an awful friend. He's totally selfish, disgusting, mean, irritating, and delusional! It'd be awesome to be able to follow him around and see all the strange stuff he gets into though.

  • I agree about Holden Caufield! Also Fred and George Weasley, Mia Thermopolis, Jane Eyre, Howard Roark, Thursday Next, and of course the Little Prince. All very different characters, but I think all of those characters would be interesting to interact with. Worst friends would be Lord Voldemort (yes I am that lame), Edward Cullen, Javert, Oedipus, and Abigail Williams. All for various reasons.

  • HANDS DOWN - JEEVES WOULD BE MY FIRST CHOICE FOR BEST FRIEND!!! ;) ... along with Holden Caufield and unnamed narrator of "Hunting Unicorns," which if you haven't read, you're missing out on one of the most devine novels ever written! King Lear for obvious reasons (and I'd have to argree with Booknerd825 about Lord Voldemort - and that wasn't lame - it was damn creative!!! ;););) ) and Charles Ryder from "Brideshead Revised."

  • Tarzan, D'Artagnan, or Huck Finn would be the best friends. Professor Challenger or anyone like him would be the worst. Our personalities would clash.

  • Of course, who wouldn't want Lizzie Bennett as best friend? Let's add Hermione from Harry Potter--I like her smarts, loyalty, and general sturdiness of character. Also, from Dies the Fire series by ST Stirling, the head of the newly formed post-apocalyptic Mackenzie clan: Juniper. I would want her by my side if battling cannibals, raging maniac SCA warlords or other disasters. Worst: the Lord Protector from Dies the Fire. A former college prof, SCA fighter, sadist John Norman-wannabe with the power to enact his gruesome fantasies! Yuck!
