"Buttonhole books" Everyone has at least one
NPR recently had a great segment on what they called 'buttonhole books' ..We have all read them...those precious few special books that we can't wait to tell someone they simply MUST read ...
That book, or if one is very lucky the special books that one never forgets...and instantly come to mind as you read this.
My fifth grade teacher long retired now, a life long book lover, who passed her love of reading on to me..also became a dear life time friend...She reads several books a month..
When I asked her what her buttonhole books were....she didn't hesitate ...
The Secret Garden
Anne Of Green Gables
The Robe
I would love to know your buttonhole books?

Hi, Edith:
I wish I knew how to get this in the right forum....thanks for replying ....no...actually The Secret Garden on NPR was also picked by several that authors that were asked for their buttonhole books.....and my friend suggested that everyone should read it....
This woman is in her 70's now and reads so many books and has all her life....for those three books to be her most memorable of all time...her buttonhole books ...I think it's wonderful that they were that special to her.
It's not the books that you have to think about....it's the special one or ones...that come first to mind....and I do believe that we all have at least one...
So what's yours?Feb 20, 2009 10:25 pm

The Hero and the Crown (Robin McKinley)
Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (David Foster Wallace)
Those are probably the ones that have lasted the longest in my life.
I also have a revolving list of stuff I've read lately that I'm telling everyone about. Right now, it's:
Mockingbird (Sean Stewart)
Spiral Hunt (Margaret Ronald)

I don't remember recommending books often, but I have mentioned "God's Debris" by Scott Adams (Dilbert's "dad") three times to as many people in the last year and a half. Also, there are books by Terry Prattchett I'll buttonhole folks over-- those friends who already read fantasy but for some strange reason haven't tried Prattchett, at least-- but which ones depend on the individual. One can always start with "The Colour of Magic", but some people would be more likely to get into the sub-series starting with "Guards, Guards"-- for instance.
