Book & Review Forums: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Has any read any of the other Oz books?
I just finished reading the Wonderful Wizard of Oz as I was interested in seeing how it compared to the movie but I know nothing of the other books.
Can anyone tell me about them? Would you recommend them?

The only other I've read was Dorothy and the Wizard, which I realized after I started that I had read out of sequence. I didn't find it quite as amusing and engaging as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz but I did enjoy it. I plan to read them all eventually because they came highly recommended to me.

Thank you. I will try reading another one after my current book and see how it compares.

I liked the series but I was surprised at first at how "dark" the stories could be.I shouldn't have been surprised, I suppose, when you consider those nasty monkeys in the movie. Try to find one with the original illustrations.

I too was surprised at how dark they were. Baum was not joking when he said he wanted it to be a modern fairy story. It easily matched some of the 'classic' fairy tales in tone. I was especially surprised and saddened by the Tin Man's tale.

They get darker as the series progress. In fact the first time I read any of them was on here! I've read 4 of them now on here. I definitely enjoy them and they constantly surprise me...

You should probably read Ozma of Oz next, just because Ozma will show up over and over again in the other books. (They seem to be missing "The Land of Oz," which is where she appears first.)
My earliest memories are of my dad reading the Oz books to me. He went start to finish, though at that point I was probably too young to distinguish between them with great certainty. Re-reading them along the way, my favorites were Tik Tok of Oz, Road to Oz, Lost Princess of Oz, and Magic of Oz. Didn't much care for Tin Woodman of Oz for some reason.
Favorite non-Baum Oz book was Xixi of Oz, by (I think) Ruth Plumbly Thompson.Oct 24, 2007 2:32 pm
