Description

He's best known for his later works, including the epic Chronicles of Narnia, but C.S. Lewis actually published his first book at just 20 years old. This early poetry collection shows Lewis's artistic sense in its nascent stages, before his conversion to Christianity, the religion that so inspired many of his later works. Here Lewis speaks from an agnostic point of view, the poems tinged with bitterness and anger—towards nature's cruelty and indifference, towards a God who promised much but gave little. As the themes of Spirits in Bondage take shape over the course of three parts, it's clear that the Lewis here is quite different from the literary one we've come to know. Take a fascinating look behind the legend and see the writer as he starts to define himself.

from darkness to light and hope

It was interesting to read this, C.S. Lewis' first book of poetry, written before his conversion, and see elements that later took greater shape in the Chronicles of Narnia. The first half was pretty dark, dismal poetry; the second half was more joyful.
