Description
Here, in one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, the courtly world collides with the world of nature. Frederick has usurped his brother Duke Senior’s throne, and Senior has been forced to flee into the Forest of Ardenne, where he lives with his band of followers. His daughter Rosalind, however, has remained at court because of her close friendship with Frederick’s own daughter Celia. The atmosphere at the court grows increasingly hostile and corrupt, and many characters, including Rosalind, seek shelter in the forest, which functions as a “green world:” a magical place of transformation where nothing is quite as it seems. Rosalind and her friend Celia disguise themselves as a young boy and a shepherdess, but Rosalind’s cross-dressing threatens to get her into trouble when she encounters Orlando, the man whom she loves but who now believes her to be a boy. Ultimately, the recuperative forest world exercises a healing power over the characters, who have been torn apart by petty grievances, but who are brought back together in a series of happy weddings.
