Description
Passions and politics collide in this extravagant play, which shifts between exotic Egypt and the Roman Empire. Mark Antony, a renowned soldier and one of the rulers of the Roman Empire, has left Rome for a life of decadence and sensuality in Egypt. His affair with the seductive Queen Cleopatra has led him to abandon his political duties. However, Julius Caesar’s nephew Octavius has no problem filling the shoes that Antony has left empty. Octavius gathers forces, establishes new allies, and turns on his former friend Antony. The climactic battle nears and Antony decides to fight Octavius at sea rather than on land, allowing Cleopatra to command a vessel. This mingling of love and politics proves to be a disastrous mistake: Cleopatra’s ships flee and Antony makes the fatal mistake of following his lover. With their enemies closing in around them, Antony and Cleopatra are left with only a few last moments before they must meet their fates. Passionate and devoted, Antony and Cleopatra’s love rivals that of Romeo and Juliet—and leads to no less a tragedy.
