Description
John Dryden gives the tragic story of Antony and Cleopatra a new life in his 1677 verse drama All For Love. As the curtain rises, chaos reigns over Antony’s court in Alexandria. Antony has deserted his fellow Roman leaders and his military duties, having fallen under the spell of the beautiful Egyptian queen, Cleopatra. To his horror, however, love’s power to conquer all becomes destructive. A bloody battle has broken out between Antony and one of his fellow leaders, Octavius. Antony finds that his desertion has lost him the favor of many of his people. As former allies shift their allegiance to Octavius, Antony looks to his lover for support and comfort. In a shocking turn of events, however, Cleopatra makes a devastating decision to leave Antony at this crucial moment. As her betrayal sends despair coursing through his heart, Antony must take stock of what is left of his kingdom and his life. Tragedy reaches a heart-breaking climax at the close of this tale of a legendary love, presented in the words of one of England’s finest poets.
