Walt Whitman
Author's Bio (see also Wikipedia)
Walt Whitman (1819-1892) played a vital role in the shaping of the American poetic voice. A poet, essayist, and journalist, Whitman was an unconventional figure in life and in legend. From his humble origins in a large and poverty-stricken family, Whitman found a place in the world of printing, becoming a printer's apprentice, and ultimately established his own newspaper in New York. Whitman's life's work is the famous Leaves of Grass, which began as a small poetry collection and found acclaim among European readers despite its unpopularity in America. Throughout his subsequent humanitarian and government work during the Civil War, Whitman continued to revise and update his poetry. Leaves of Grass as we have it today is Whitman's heartfelt and dedicated poetic contribution, one which has gone on to influence countless other writers around the world.
